A woman shows me how to use a neti pot.1 The salt water stings. My vision blurs. When everything comes back into focus, I say, “disappear into those Eastern European eyes.” I see Karabo. She sits in the back of my mother’s Ford Capri. She coughs stars and hides them under the seat.
A neti pot is a small container used for nasal irrigation, a practice in which the nasal passages are flushed with a saline solution. The pot usually resembles a small teapot, with a spout that fits into one nostril. The saline solution is poured into one nostril so that it flows through the nasal passages and out through the other, carrying away mucus and other debris.↩
