Neon questions on a screen. A contestant wins a game show and throws a William Morris1 chair through a kitchen window.
The kitchen door opens. The backyard has a swimming pool. A woman and I climb upstairs.
“Why?” I ask.
“Because we ain't been this way yet.”
A horde of faceless people attack us. They surround us. One throws a syringe at me but misses. One faceless figure shoots another. One tries to escape.
I realise I am dreaming.
I need to dream of part two.
But the sequel is already dead.
William Morris (1834–1896) was a British designer, writer, publisher, and socialist associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. He is best known for his textile, wallpaper, and furniture designs, which often drew on medieval forms, dense botanical patterns, and a resistance to industrial mass production.↩
